We make a reef-tank app and the displays that go with it. We've kept a plain-English summary at the top of each section, in italics. The rest is the binding version, and the capitalised parts matter most: they limit what we're responsible for. Please read them.
TankSensei is run by Printed Reef Inc. Using it means you agree to this.
These Terms of Use ("Terms") are a binding agreement between you and Printed Reef Inc. ("Printed Reef", "we", "us", "our"), which operates TankSensei at tanksensei.com, the TankSensei web app, and the software on PrintedReef devices (together, the "Service"). By creating an account, checking the acceptance box, or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.
You must be at least 18 years old to create an account or use the Service. By using it you confirm that you are.
A tool for keeping track of a reef tank. Software, not a person.
TankSensei helps you track an aquarium: chemistry readings, livestock, equipment, supplies, maintenance tasks, and data from connected devices and services. It includes an AI helper called Sensei that writes summaries, livestock fit checks and dose-calculator commentary from the data you log. It is software. It is not a veterinarian, a chemist, an aquarium professional, or a substitute for your own judgement and hands-on care.
Sensei can be wrong. Double-check anything before it goes in your tank. The call is yours.
Everything the Service shows you (scores, readings, trends, forecasts, alerts, dose amounts, livestock verdicts and AI-generated text) is general information, not professional advice. AI output can be inaccurate or incomplete, readings can be wrong or out of date, and every tank is different. You are solely responsible for what you add to your tank, what you change, and the care of your livestock.
The dose calculator uses published reef-chemistry math, stays under daily safety limits and rounds down, but it relies on the numbers you or your devices give it. Always confirm a reading with your own test kit before dosing, check the amount, and add it yourself. The Service never doses anything for you.
Notifications can arrive late or not at all. Never rely on them alone to keep a tank alive.
The Service can send alerts by push notification, email or text message about readings, devices going offline, or tasks. We do not guarantee that any alert will be sent, delivered, or delivered on time. Alerts depend on things outside our control, including your internet connection and power, your phone and its settings, your email provider, mobile carriers, device firmware, and third-party services. A missing alert does not mean your tank is fine.
Keep independent safeguards for anything that could harm your livestock, such as temperature controllers, heater guards, leak and water-level alarms, backup power, and regular in-person checks. The Service is not a monitoring, alarm or emergency service.
Our displays get software updates over the internet. We test them, but an update can still go wrong.
PrintedReef devices, such as the 7" desktop display and the round display, run software we provide and update over the internet ("firmware updates"). Updates may be offered or installed to fix problems, add features or keep the device working with the Service. We design updates to recover by themselves when one fails to start, but an update can still fail, change how a device behaves, or leave it needing a manual re-flash. Don't unplug a device while it is updating.
Devices display information; they do not control your equipment unless a feature clearly says so. Opening, modifying or loading other software onto a device is at your own risk. Any warranty for a device you purchased is only the one provided with that purchase, and nothing in these Terms adds to it.
We connect to other companies' products. We don't control them and aren't responsible for them.
The Service can connect to products and services we don't own or control, such as aquarium controllers (for example CoralVue HYDROS and Neptune Systems Apex), cloud and messaging providers, and AI providers. Their availability, accuracy and behaviour are their responsibility, and your use of them is governed by their own terms. Names of third-party products are trademarks of their owners and are used only to describe compatibility; it does not mean they endorse us. If a third party changes or withdraws its service, parts of the Service may stop working.
Keep your login to yourself.
Give accurate information, keep your password and sign-in links private, and tell us if you think your account has been used without permission. You are responsible for activity under your account, including by anyone you share a tank with or give a sitter link to.
Your tank data is yours. You let us use it to run the Service. What you post publicly, others can see.
You keep ownership of the readings, photos, notes and other content you add. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, process and display that content only as needed to operate, secure and improve the Service. Content you choose to share publicly (for example community store listings, events, or photos you submit for the shared livestock catalogue) may be shown to other users, and we may keep showing it after you delete your account where removing it would break the shared record. You confirm you have the right to share anything you upload. If you send us feedback or suggestions, we may use them without owing you anything. How we handle personal information is described in the Privacy Policy.
Free during beta. We'll warn you before that changes.
The Service is free during the beta. If we introduce paid features, we'll tell you in advance and nothing will be charged without your clear agreement. Devices are sold separately, on the terms given at purchase.
We try hard, but we can't promise it's perfect or always available.
The Service, including all software, firmware, AI output, data, alerts and devices' software, is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, non-infringement, and uninterrupted or error-free operation. We do not warrant that the Service or any alert, reading, calculation or recommendation will be accurate, complete, timely or reliable, or that your tank or livestock will thrive. Some jurisdictions don't allow excluding certain warranties, so some of this may not apply to you.
We're not responsible for tank losses, dead livestock or damaged equipment. If we're ever found liable, the most we'd owe is capped.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Printed Reef and its officers, employees and suppliers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for any loss of livestock, coral, plants or other animals, damage to aquariums, equipment or property (including water damage), loss of data, or loss of profits, arising from or related to the Service, any device's software, any firmware update, any alert or missing alert, or any AI output or calculation, even if we were told such damage was possible.
Our total liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months before the claim arose, or (b) fifty US dollars (US $50). These limits apply to any theory of liability and even if a remedy fails of its essential purpose. They do not limit liability that cannot be limited by law.
If your misuse gets us sued, you cover it.
You agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless Printed Reef and its officers, employees and suppliers from any claims, damages, losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your content, your misuse of the Service, or your breach of these Terms or of the law.
You can leave any time. We can suspend accounts that break these Terms.
You can delete your account at any time from settings; we delete your data within 30 days, except as described in section 8 and where the law requires us to keep it. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these Terms or puts the Service or other users at risk, and we may change or discontinue features. If we shut the Service down, we'll give reasonable notice and a chance to export your data. Sections 3 to 6 and 8 to 17 survive the end of this agreement.
If something goes wrong, email us first. If we can't sort it out, it goes to individual arbitration, not a class action. You can opt out within 30 days.
Talk to us first. Before starting any claim, email [email protected] with a description of the problem, and we'll both try in good faith to resolve it for 30 days.
Please read this carefully. It affects your rights. Any dispute arising from or relating to these Terms or the Service that isn't resolved informally will be settled by binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Consumer Arbitration Rules, instead of in court. You and Printed Reef each waive the right to a jury trial and to take part in a class action, class arbitration or representative action. The arbitrator may not combine claims of more than one person.
Either of us may instead bring an individual claim in small-claims court, and either of us may ask a court for an injunction to protect intellectual property. The arbitration will take place in the county where you live or by video, unless we both agree otherwise. You can opt out of this section by emailing [email protected] within 30 days of first accepting these Terms, with the subject "Arbitration opt-out" and the email address on your account. If this section is found unenforceable, disputes will be heard only in the state or federal courts located in Illinois, and the class-action waiver still applies to the extent the law allows.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and by the Federal Arbitration Act for section 15. If you live outside the United States, you may also have mandatory consumer rights under your local law that these Terms don't take away.
If we change them in a way that matters, you'll be asked to accept again.
We may update these Terms. If a change is material, we'll ask you to accept the new version the next time you use the Service; until you do, you can't keep using it. The version date at the top shows which version is current.
These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service. If any part is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a part isn't a waiver of it. You may not transfer these Terms; we may transfer them as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets. We aren't responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control, such as outages of internet, power or third-party services.
Questions about these Terms: email [email protected].
